Dimitar Berbatov completed a last‐gasp move to Manchester United on deadline day as the prolonged transfer saga concluded in predictable fashion. United were made to sweat, however, to complete a move for the Spurs frontman with rivals City launching a shock £30million bid for the player. Frazier Campbell has joined Spurs on a season loan as part of the deal.

Sir Alex Ferguson secured the signing  of his top summer target in the closing moments of transfer deadline day.

The United boss has faced a monumental battle this summer in trying to persuade Spurs to part company with the want‐away Bulgarian skipper.

However, most pundits expected the deal to be done on deadline day before the prolonged saga took a shock twist.

Manchester City, on the verge of a shock takeover from the Abu Dhabi United Group, had a bid in the region of 30million accepted for the forward and suddenly an incredible switch to Eastlands was on the cards.

That forced United´s hand, with Fergie soon matching City´s offer and agreeing to send Fraizier Campbell to Spurs on a loan basis as part of the deal. That bid was accepted, Berbatov soon agreed terms and United had their man.

When the paperwork was finally signed, United´s new striker said: "Joining United is a dream come true. I look forward to playing my part in helping this club win more honours,"

The deal has been overshadowed by Man City´s shock deadline day antics. The Bitter Blues stunned the football world by beating Chelsea to the signing of Robinho whilst making bids for a number of other top players.

A big welcome to Old Trafford to Berbatov. With Campbell and Louis Saha heading for the exit door, United are relying on three world‐class strikers in their hunt for honours this season.
