Eight Reds in international action

A rare goal for Wes
By Chris, August 21 2008
No fewer than eight Manchester Unite players were in international action on Wednesday evening. Wesley Brown took the headlines as he scored his first international goal as a below-par England drew 2-2 with the Czech Republic at Wembley. Meanwhile, Johnny Evans produced an excellent defensive display as 10-man Northern Ireland were unlucky to leave Hampden Park with a goalless draw.

Brown, Rio Ferdinand and Wayne Rooney were all in action for England at Wembley. 69,738 were in attendance and witnessed the visiting Czechs dominate.

England, undeservedly, twice came from behind with Brown heading home just after half-time and Joe Cole poking home a last-gasp equaliser. Milan Baros and later Marek Jankulovski put the Czechs ahead.

Meanwhile, Evans produced an impressive display at the back as 10-man Northern Ireland drew 0-0 against Darren Fletcher's Scotland. Ryan McGivern was dismissed on his international debut for the away side - but the Ulsterman should have taken the lead only minutes later with ex-Red David Healy missing a penalty on the hour-mark.

John O'Shea was in action for the Republic of Ireland in a 1-1 draw with Norway; whilst Carlos Tevez played 81 minutes as a weakened Argentinean side missed their Olympic stars as they were held to a shock 0-0 draw by Belarus.

Nani may be suspended from domestic action but produced an impressive display for Portugal netting the final goal in a 5-0 thrashing of the Faroe Islands, whilst Patrice Evra played in a goal fest as France beat Sweden 5-2.

As for Beijing, Anderson's Olympic duty comes to an end on Thursday as Brazil battle it out with Belgium for the bronze medal.
